(verse, 2, 3, 4...)
we went out to dinner
at the same place every friday
hardly made the bills work
mm but we ate like we were rich
talkin' bout our future
and the houses we could live in
we could have a red door
ooh and a room for playing cards
we believed that we could have it all
we believed that we could have it all
now we're getting older
and this life's not as we planned it
money's getting tighter
ooh and i need a second job
the days are getting longer
and the season's more demanding
but i look across the table
ooh girl our future's lookin bright
i still believe that we can have it all
i still believe that we can have it all
so we went back to dinner
at the place we'd go on fridays
forgot about our problems
ooh so we played a game of cards
i look across the table
who knew that we could have it all

i wrote this while sitting in traffic on the way to take sam to dinner one friday. we really did eat like we were rich people, and we still definitely kind of do.
this song is about holding on to something like hope, and making room for feasting and celebration even when life seems bleak, mundane, and downright too expensive.
i really did need a second job when i wrote this.
no the restaurant was not t.g.i fridays.
yes we bring a deck of cards and play speed before the food arrives.
even at fancy restaurants.
special shoutout to my dear friends james, janelle, and randy. i wouldn't have been in writing mode at this time in my life if it weren't for your encouragement and our nostalgic little email thread.
